Divorcing in Las Vegas
What Happens in Las Vegas, Sets You Free. . .
Las Vegas is as well known for the quickie divorce as well as for the quick and easy wedding. In 1930, Las Vegas had a population of just over 5,000. In 1931 three events occurred that changed the population of Las Vegas forever: the legalization of gambling, the start of construction of the Hoover Dam, and the liberalization of the divorce laws in the State of Nevada. By making residency easier to attain, a quick divorce could be acquired after only six weeks of residency. These newly established residents, mostly women, stayed at what was then called “dude ranches” located on a strip of land that is now part of Las Vegas Boulevard. These ranches were the precursors of the hotels that soon lined “the Strip”.
Today, Nevada leads the United States in number of divorces per capita. Residency must be established for one of the parties and all legal forms must be appropriately filed. There are numerous Nevada divorce lawyers who specialize in getting their clients a quick and easy divorce or annulment while ensuring that all legal requirements are met.
The Wedding…
After a night of fun and non-stop drinking many a tourist has awakened to hangover and a brand new spouse. It is a scenario that always gets a good laugh or makes a great story line in sitcoms and movies. The hangover will eventually go away but getting out of the marriage is not so easy and much more costly than the marriage license and a few aspirins.
…the Annulment.
“How do we get out of this” may be the first words spoken the morning after saying “I do” the night before. Getting an annulment quickly is very important.
When you realize you've made a hasty decision to wed while hearty partying in Las Vegas, and the person you just married isn't the one you wish to spend the rest of your life or even next week with, it is easier to get an annulment rather than a divorce.
Getting an annulment is not the same as getting a divorce. The divorce says a marriage is over; an annulment says the marriage was never valid in the first place and the law views it as if it had never happened.
A quick annulment is can only occur if both parties agree the marriage was a mistake. Assets are not an issue because an annulment renders the original marriage null and void.
The legal process has become very efficient and can be completed very quickly but legal standards must be met to get a valid annulment or divorce, even in Nevada.
The Divorce
It has been estimated that 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Divorcing is not an easy decision. Each situation is different and the laws of each state vary. Divorcing in Nevada may be a little easier from a legal standpoint. The least expensive divorces occur when both parties are willing to be divorced and have reached a mutual agreement on all issues. The more legal counsel you need, the more it will cost and the longer it will take. A quick and cheap divorce can be accomplished only if both parties are willing and ready to move on, uncontested.
